Quality Control by Geographic Resources Center (GRC) completed 10/13/2003 to adjust for false Geocoding results. (Geocoding points that were originally accurate to the ZIP code centroid.)
PUBLIC SCHOOLS updated 5/2004. Locational updates provided by GEOGRAPHIC RESOURCE CENTER 6/24/2004
New schools for year 2004-2005 placed using Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS.
5/9/2007 - schools closed since 2005-2006 were deleted. Schools new for 2006-2007 were added by geocoding addresses with Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS. Enrollment for these new schools is "0" at the time of data layer creation.
4/7/2008 - new schools for 2007-2008 school year added. Several corrections to locations made to GRC work done in 2003.
3/31/2009 - new schools for 2008-2009 added, any closed schools removed. Locations of new schools photo identified if possible.

Shape file is copied from temporary workspace into facility directory located at DHSS as M:\GISDATA\FAcility. Shape file from 2006 is renamed from schoolPub.shp to schoolPub06.shp. File for 2007 is given the name schoolPub.shp in its place.

XLS file from DESE web site is downloaded. File is imported into Microsoft Access. School ID is created by concatenating district number and school number. Fields are added for latitude/longitude and location code. Latitude and Longitude from previous year's layer is transferred to new file using Access update query. Locations that do not have lat/long field are new for 2007-2008. New schools are put into a new file for processing.

Access table of new schools is geocoded using Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS. All points are checked against 2006 aerial photography. (In the Eastern 1/2 of the state, the 2007 aerial photography is used.) Latitude and Longitude coordinates for corrected locations are added to table.

New latitude and longitude points are linked back to Access table of all schools. Points are displayed in ArcMap using Display XY command. Data is exported to shape file.

As a quality check, entire table is geocoded again. Fields for X and Y coordinates are added to this temporary file using the ArcMap command Calculate Geometry. Shape file from previous step also has these fields added. In Access, a table is created that contains the ID, school name and XY coordinates pairs for each. This resultant table is used to generate a line file using the Hawth's Tools command Add XY Line Data from Table. Length of these lines are calculated in miles using the ArcMap Calculate Geometry command. Schools that were more than 1 mile different (between original check at MU in 2004 and regeocoded locations) were verified. Several points were determined to be incorrect (often high school and junior high locations were reversed).

New facilities for 2009 (there were 29) were geocoded using the software Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS. Positions were photo identified on 2007 aerial photography where possible (see loc_code attribute for level of positional placement). Latitude, Longitude and Loc_Code were copied and pasted into the missing fields in the working full table of 2008-2009 sites. Table was then displayed as XY events. Events were then exported to personal geodatabase. Spatial join to county boundaries was made to add a column for county name.

Metadata from 2008 was exported to text and updated for 2009. Metadata in text format was then imported back into the personal geodatabase. The personal geodatabase was then exported to shape file format. The shape file was copied to M:\GISDATA\Facility. (The previous year's layer was copied to M:\GISDATA|archiveFacility and renamed schoolPublic08.shp.
