Missouri Vector Data

MSDIS is Missouri's clearinghouse for digital geospatial data and has been responsible for collecting hundreds of various files over the years for distribution.

MSDIS Open Data Portal

MSDIS maintains an ESRI Open Data Portal page to distribute the latest Missouri GIS data. The MSDIS Open Data page provides a searchable download interface for important statewide data that have been recently developed or updated by our partner agencies.

MSDIS Data Library

The MSDIS Data Library is the file server replacement to the old MSDIS ftp. This directory contains all of the data that MSDIS has distributed in the past, in addition to what is also being currently distributed on the Open Data Portal. Please be aware that, as MSDIS has been collecting and distributing spatial data for many years, many datasets stored in the Library will be out of date and many others will be in an older spatial data formats (such as E00 files) that will need to be converted before being used by modern software.

Many of these datasets can be collected into broad categories that reflect the general theme represented or the agency responsible for developing or maintaining the data. Below is a list of some of the major categories that MSDIS uses to organize geospatial vector data. Since some data can reasonably fall into more than one category, there is often some duplication and a single dataset may appear in multiple places. MSDIS is constantly trying to reduce this duplication where possible and, at times, new categories may be added to the data library while others may be consolidated together.

Administrative and Political Boundaries

These data include Missouri's county boundaries, school district boundaries, and Congressional boundaries: Administrative_Political_Boundaries

Business and Economic

These data are used to represent Missouri's Enhanced Enterprise Zones and Distressed Communities: Business_Economic

Culture, Society, and Demography

Primarily derived from the US Census, these data represent and describe the people and places of Missouri as well as various historic sites: Cultural_Society_Demography

Environment and Conservation

This category is used to house data generally related to Missouri's environment and natural resources that are not better suited to more specific categories such as Geology and Geophysical or Inland Water Resources: Environment_Conservation

Facilities and Structures

These data represent specific facilities, buildings, and/or physical structures found throughout Missouri. Specific examples include schools (both public and private) and the 2014 Missouri statewide structures project: Facilities_Structures

Geology and Geophysical

This category is specifically for digital geospatial data related to Missouri's geology and mineral resources: Geology_Geophysical

Health

These data, primarily provided by the Missouri Dept of Health and Senior Services, includes points files for Missouri hospitals, local public health agencies, rural health clinics, and similar healthcare-related facilities: Health

Inland Water Resources

As with the Geology and Geophysical category, this group is specifically for data that relate to and/or represent Missouri's water resources: Inland_Water_Resources

Land Use/LandCover

MSDIS has several sets of Land Use data available for distribution:
LandUseLandCover

Transportation Networks

These data represent that various facets of Missouri's transportation infrastructure, such as roads, railways, trails, and airports: Transportation_Network

TIGER and US Census Data

MSDIS has collected a variety of TIGER and US Census data that have been arranged and organized as necessary. New TIGER data are released every year but the US Census remains a decennial program, therefore some of these datasets will be more useful for certain purposes than others.

Please also note that some TIGER data are very similar in design and purpose to other data developed by Missouri agencies. Such overlapping data are presented here for completeness and comparison purposes.

US Census 2000
US Census 2010

Additional Vector Data

MSDIS has a wealth of geospatial data not included in the above topics. These datasets can be found in the MSDIS Vector Data Directory
